Then, put the cubes for each compound word into a baggie.

Letter Identification: A Fun and Simple Reading Activity

Little Miss A has taken a real interest in letters of the alphabet lately. I definitely think it's because they are twins and we have had to label so many of their things from such an early age to avoid arguments that my little Misses have been able to recognise their names from quite a young age. Little Miss A is fascinated by her name and particularly likes the 'A' - for the past few weeks she has been spotting words that have a capital A and saying, "That says Abby-dee" (as that is what she often calls herself).

"I Can Spell My Name" Hopscotch Game

Here’s a variation of hopscotch we play to help the kids learn to spell their names.  I briefly highlighted the game in this post, but felt it was worthy of a post all its own. :)

To set up, I use sidewalk chalk to make a square for each letter in the child’s name and a big box at the end to write their whole name.  Then I fill in the letters and write their name at the end.

To play, we practice hopping on each letter and saying it aloud.  We say the whole name at the end.

(I apologize about the picture quality.  The idea for this game hit me when we were outside playing one day, but I didn’t have my camera with me.  I ran back out that evening to grab photos since it was supposed to rain the next day.  It was nearly dark out when I took these, but hopefully you can at least get the idea.  Also, the vehicle was not parked in the way of Luke’s name when we were actually playing! lol)

Car Ride Activities Set 1

In order to prepare for a long car ride with two young children I made as many simple activities as I could think of to pull out in the car. If any of you need to go on a trip with young children you might try these. They would be great activities at home too, but these are pretty portable and so I save them for the car trip.

Matching Pole

I made four of these. One for each child on the way to New Orleans and one for each child on the way home. I wrote letters on dot stickers and scattered the same letters on a paper towel roll. The idea is to stick the letter sticker onto the matching letter on the pole. I did the same thing for Ava, except for hers I drew simple shapes instead of letters.
